Whether you’ve already been playing ping pong this summer or not, don’t miss out of a day of ping pong street parties across the country courtesy of the Next Big Ping initiative.

The Next Big Ping, set to take place in public spaces across the country on August 3rd 2012 aims to create a buzz around outdoor ping pong, and to ask questions about the sustainability of ping pong’s future beyond Ping! and the Olympics. Here at the EPPA we firmly believe every urban community should have access to free-to-play ping pong tables, and be educated in how to get the most out of them. The initiative explores the potential for starting, and establishing new communities built around ping pong sustainably, discussing why this is important in the long-term and to enlighten people about the benefits of regular ping pong.

Well implemented ping pong projects should be at the heart of every urban community because the game is so inclusive, to such a diverse cross-section of the population, and can include up to twenty or more people playing at once.

Playing triggers laughter that helps to break through social barriers, and provides a cheap, active alternative to boredom and computer games – especially relevant to young people. Games of ping pong can be as competitive or collaborative as players choose, and a great way to meet people and make new friends. Moreover, you don’t need any skill to start enjoying the game, and there are so many variations that provide endless challenges to look forward to. Ten year olds can be happily matched against thirty year olds, and playing improves hand to eye coordination, mental alertness, concentration and the development of different muscle groups amongst all age groups.

Participation also develops social and communicative skills, a chance to share experiences, to feel part of a community and the potential to develop into a serious, competitive player, if that’s what you want?

Find out how to get involved in ping pong’s first national day on August 3rd by visiting www.pingpongengland.co.uk/nextbigping
